Donate a Book Today!

![]() | Welcome to the Alamance Racial Equity Alliance newsletter! As we walk alongside one another in 2025, it is so very important that time is spent building relationships. A key focus of our work this year will be just that: getting to know one another and deepening those connections. We are a community of anti-racist people that encourages the transformation of thought through collective learning, meaningful relationships, and community events. |
The Alamance Racial Equity Alliance (AREA) is partnering with groups and organizations, including the Alamance Branch of the NAACP, to collect 400 NEW books by African-American, Black, and multiracial authors to fill kids’ (ages 0-12) giveaway bags for Burlington’s Juneteenth Celebration on June 13. These books need to feature African-American and Black kids and stories. Here is a link to various lists. We highly encourage you to purchase books from local bookstores like Persnickety Books or Black-owned NC bookstores like the Next Chapter Bookstore, Liberation Station Bookstore, The Urban Reader, Rofhiwa, or Shelves Bookstore.
Donations can be dropped off at one of the locations below by Sunday, June 1.
Mayco Bigelow Center at North Park
Elon University - Gender & LGBTQIA Center
Persnickety Books
First Presbyterian Church of Burlington
Elon Community Church
Nice Eye Care
Kindred Seedlings Farm
African-American Cultural Arts & History Center
If you would like to donate funds for books to be purchased on your behalf, you can send donations via Venmo @alamanceracialequity or write a check to Alamance Racial Equity Alliance and send c/o Tanya Kline, 114 Tall Timber Dr., Gibsonville, NC 27249. If you'd like to purchase a book online, you can ship to Zion Cash, Mayco Bigelow Center, 849 Sharpe Road, Burlington, North Carolina, 27217.
If you / your organization are willing to be a drop-off location, find a bin, print and attach the flyer attached here, and email [email protected] to let us know! All books should be taken to the Mayco Bigelow Center at North Park by Monday, June 2 at 1p.
Thanks so much for your contribution to this important effort for racial justice, youth support, education, and celebration in our community.
Love and justice,
The Alamance Racial Equity Alliance team

AREA Happenings

Brewed Awakenings, a meet and greet with AREA, is taking place at the charming Persnickety Books right here in Burlington. It's a fantastic opportunity for folks to connect with AREA members in a relaxed setting, perhaps while enjoying a coffee and browsing the selection of books that Persnickety offers. AREA members will be on hand to chat and answer any questions you might have about what the organization has been working on. We’ll be situated at a table to the right as you enter the shop.
