Welcome to the Alamance Racial Equity Alliance newsletter! As we walk alongside one another in 2025, it is so very important that time is spent building relationships. A key focus of our work this year will be just that: getting to know one another and deepening those connections. We are a community of anti-racist people that encourages the transformation of thought through collective learning, meaningful relationships, and community events.

Our purpose is to end racism.

We believe in the power of community, and we know that together, we can achieve incredible things. Your monthly donation allows us to build a stronger future for our community by providing critical funding for community events and continued education. An accomplished scholar, teacher and attorney, Frederick Lawrence is one of the nation’s leading experts on civil rights, free expression and bias crimes. A distinguished lecturer at the Georgetown Law Center, he previously served as president of Brandeis University, dean of the George Washington University Law School and visiting professor and senior research scholar at Yale Law School.

Stagville Historic Site Tour: Understanding the Lives and Work of Enslaved People

April 25th, 2025 1-3pm

Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30,000 acres of land and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation, including original housing for enslaved people (1851), a massive barn (1860), and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation.

Alamance County Community Remembrance Coalition

The goal of community education is to create opportunities to promote public dialogue about the history of racial injustice and racial terror in our community in order to begin the work of repairing the harms caused from an era of enslavement, an era of racial terror lynching and violence, an era of Jim Crow segregation, and an era of mass incarceration.

Home | Alamance County Community Remembrance Coalition

The Alamance County Community Remembrance Coalition was formed in November 2019 as a result of a few coalition members journeying to the Equal Justice Initiative’s (EJI) Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. These members returned with a renewed passion to bring EJI projects to their community to recognize the tragic history of local racial terror lynchings. Coalition members contacted other community leaders who could bring valuable knowledge of history, families, events, and community work.
